Personal Profile
I contribute to the teaching of both the internal and extramural journalism papers at Massey. My research interests include the history of journalism, consumer journalism, reporting on diversity, the relationship between fact and fiction in reportage, and journalism and democracy. Before coming to the university, I worked for many years at Consumer magazine, initially as a political and financial journalist, then as the senior finance writer and latterly as manager of the writing staff. I continue to publish freelance articles in a variety of major New Zealand publications.
I have been a judge for the Qantas Media Awards, President of the Journalism Education Association of NZ, and on the Executive of the Journalism Education Association of Australia. I currently represent journalism educators on the industry body that oversees the training of journalists throughout the country, the NZ Journalists' Training Organisation.
I was also awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award in 2009.
